When considering the best starting instrument for a young child, piano is often the best place to start. Nearly all accomplished musicians, composers, and conductors are proficient on the piano. An understanding of the piano allows people to transition into other instruments much more quickly.

Tollefson Music believes that a musical education needs to be skill-based, fun and rewarding for the student to learn best. A student is most receptive to learning new musical skills and ideas when they look forward to practicing between lessons, and the lessons themselves.

Tollefson Music was founded by Ross Tollefson. A lifelong music student, he started his education from an early age in the Bethesda area. Ross’s mother, Marcia, first taught him how to play the piano in their home. Ross still remembers playing and singing his favorite songs with his mother. His love for music quickly grew and studied privately with different piano, guitar, and horn teachers in the area. Ross started teaching his own students privately in high school because he wanted to share his love and passion with others.
